Dan Lederman was re-lected to the South Dakota State Senate in 2012. After winning re-election, Lederman earned the vote of the Republican caucus to serve as Majority Whip in senate leadership. In 2013, Lederman was elected to serve as Assistant Majority Leader of the State Senate.
Lederman serves as Vice-Chairman on the Commerce and Energy Committee and is also a member of State Affairs and Local Government committees.
In the 2009 legislative session, Lederman was the prime sponsor of the Israel Solidarity Resolution which reaffirmed our support of Israel’s right to self-defense after Operation Cast Lead.
In the 2010 session he passed the Iran Divestment Bill that forced the state of South Dakota to divest from foreign oil companies that invest in Iran.
In 2012, Lederman passed anti-bullying legislation that required all school districts to have policies that met requirements to work toward a safer learning environment. In 2013, Lederman led the push to rewrite captive insurance laws to keep South Dakota competitive with other states.
Dan was awarded a fellowship by the Council of State Governments to attend the Bowhay Leadership Institute. He serves on the CSG Canadian Relations and is the Chairman of the ALEC Surety Subcommittee. Dan is a member of the Republican Jewish Coalition Young Leaders Board of Directors and was recently selected by ACYPL to represent the United States in Malaysia and Indonesia. Sen. Lederman was also recognized as one of South Dakota’s Top Ten Young Leaders by the South Dakota Junior Chamber of Commerce. Lederman was selected to participate in and completed the 2013 Toll Fellowship, one of the nation’s premier leadership development programs for state government officials.
Before serving in the legislature, Dan Lederman served as a County Commissioner leading the fight to improve services without raising property taxes by increasing revenue within individual county departments. He succeeded in adding more than two million dollars to the tax rolls and recovering thousands in back taxes while serving on the Union County Commission Board.
Dan is an owner and operator of a bail bond company that has agents across the Midwest. He and his brothers manage several businesses including a clothing store that has been in the family for three generations.
Sen. Lederman lives in Dakota Dunes with his wife Jessica and three children. Dan served in the Army National Guard as a combat medic until being honorably discharged and serves as Membership Chair for American Legion Post #319 in North Sioux City.
