HURON, SOUTH DAKOTA-This year at the South Dakota State Fair in Huron, local 4-H youth teamed up with state lawmakers to participate in the third annual Legislative Livestock Showmanship Competition. The competition featured 15 state legislators paired with a youth 4-H beef exhibitor from their home district.
One of those participants was Alexa Montagne from rural Elk Point. Alexa, a seventh-grader at Elk Point-Jefferson and a member of the A-1 Alcester 4-H Club, partnered with Union County legislator State Senator Dan Lederman to show her 1250 pound bull, “Red Bull”. The duo earned first place in their class and went on to compete in the semi-finals.
Earlier this year Alexa’s Limousin heifer was named Grand Champion at the Union County Fair and that distinction earned her the opportunity to compete at the State Fair. “Red Bull” went on to win Grand Champion in the Limousin Class at this year’s state competition.
One of the fun opportunities that Alexa had, in addition to competing against other 4-H youth, was coaching Senator Lederman in the basic points of beef exhibition.
Senator Lederman stated that, “Alexa did a great job of raising Red Bull and I was really amazed at how much work is required to exhibit cattle in a competition like this. Her hard work and determination are going to pay great dividends in the future.”
